Puget Sound Radio Broadcasters - Soundie Award
National Retail Merchants/National Radio Broadcasters Association - First Place for Radio Commercials
Washington State University Edward R. Murrow School of Communications Hall of Achievement - 2011
The award reads -
As a student at WSU, Steve Montgomery showed potential as an on-air talent as well as ability to
manage. In 1966 he was the public address announcer for the athletic department, announcing
Cougar basketball and baseball games. He was also involved in the management of KWSU as
operations chief. In the 45 years since then, he has found success in nearly every phase of the
broadcasting and advertising industries.
For the past 24 years he has owned a Seattle advertising agency, Montgomery Marketing and
Communications. The company produces broadcast ad campaigns for a number of Seattle
area retailers. MMC creations have won national and regional awards and Montgomery’s
voice is heard on radio and television commercials throughout Western Washington.
“I included communications in the name of the company so I wouldn’t be confined to just
advertising and marketing,” explained Montgomery. “There were things I wanted to continue
to do in other areas.”
Those areas have included announcing games for the Seattle Supersonics as well as Seattle’s
professional soccer, tennis and volleyball teams. His work as the broadcast voice of unlimited
hydroplane racing has taken him across the country and around the world and included
anchoring dozens of programs on ESPN, ESPN2 and Speed Channel.
Before starting MMC, Steve worked in all phases of broadcast programming, sales and management. He was the program director at KIRO Radio during the transition from music to news radio in the early 70’s and the station’s first afternoon news host. Later in that decade and the 80’s he was in sales and management at Seattle’s Country KAYO as well as KISW FM.
Montgomery says, “The WSU Communications experience gives a student a priceless opportunity to explore various phases of the communications industries before picking one as a career. In fact, you may want to pick more than one!”
Steve has served on the Board of Directors of the Bellevue Boys and Girls Club, the Ronald McDonald House Holiday Cruise and the Hydroplane and Race Boat Museum. Steve and his wife Debbie live in Kent, Washington and have five grown children and twelve grand-children.
